Wednesday 17th June - The Morning Show with Declan Meehan

Wednesday 17th June

The Morning Show with Declan Meehan

The show this morning was dominated by the tragic deaths of the J1 students who passed away following the collapse of a balcony in Berkeley. Here in East Coast FM our thoughts are particularly with the family and friends of Olivia Burke. Olivia had just completed a 5 month college work experience programme with us where she excelled hugely and demonstrated a great appetite for the business world. She designed digital platforms for us and sold advertising space on that platform. For a girl of just 21 she showed massive potential for a bright and fruitful career in media. Our thoughts are now with her loved ones.

Councillor Pat Doran joined Declan to speak about the rise in rural crime while Tom Shortt from Wicklow IFA explained how farmers in particular have been affected. Irish MEP Deirdre Clune joined Declan to speak about the pressures that hotels are being faced with with increased competition from online services such as Airbnb and local hotelier and Fianna Fáil councillor Pat Casey spoke about what hotels are doing in to innovate in the face of the competition.

11- 12pm

Our business correspondent Vincent Wall explained the background of the Gordon Brother who up until recently owned the Clery's department store before selling it on Friday morning. Kris O Neill who was in college with Olivia Burke and worked with her on a college placement here in East Coast FM told Declan about what work they got upto in East Coast FM and his memories of her, while Deirdre Conroy a writer, architectural historian and contributor with the Irish Independent spoke to Declan about how she felt following on from the deaths in Berekley. We were also joined by Orlaith Sunderland, Aoife Gregory and Niall Kinsella, who are all students from The Vault youth service in Arklow.
