Seagulls earn a valuable point

Bray Wanderers' impressive start to the season continued as they left Oriel Park with a well-earned point following a scoreless draw with Dundalk.

The home side's Johnny Breen had the first effort of a lacklustre first-half. The teenager, drafted in for the unwell Daniel Kearns just before kick-off, fired his effort well over after nice approach work by Jason Byrne.

Bray had their first attempt seven minutes later, seconds after a Dundalk attack broke down on the edge of their own penalty area.Conor Murphy latched on to a long clearance but, after escaping Michael Hector's attentions, his shot from 20-yards was easily held by Peter Cherrie.

Cherrie then had to parry a Colin Hawkins header away from danger minutes later, just when it looked like the centre-back's header was going to carry past the Scottish goalkeeper.

Dundalk, playing their 16th game of the season, lacked their usual thrust but they had a good chance to take a lead into the interval after 32 minutes. Simon Madden's cross from the right was followed all the way by Jason Byrne but the striker could only hammer his left-footed volley over the top.

The first 15 minutes of the second-half saw more chances created than in the whole of the first half.

Byrne headed over from a Ross Gaynor near-post corner in the 47th minute and the duo combined again on the hour mark only for Byrne's spectacular overhead kick from the penalty spot to fly off target.

Bray had chances off their own, with John Mulroy shooting over after good play by Gary Dempsey in the build-up, before Murphy should have done better from 20 yards after a slip by Hector.

The Dundalk centre-back almost won the points late on but Matt Gregg managed to turn his close-range touch on to the post.
