Bray Lose at home Again

James McClean's first league goal of the season secured Derry'sopening away victory in the Airtricity Premier Division.

The result means Bray have failed to win in all competitions at the Carlisle Grounds after five attempts in the 2011 campaign.

Substitute Stephen McLaughlin worked space on the right wing to whip in a left-footed 74th minute cross and McClean rose above Dean Zambra to guide a close-range header past Matt Gregg. However, with the contest poised at 1-1, Wanderers should have gone in front in the 69th minute, but Conor Murphy missed a sitter.

Danny O'Connor weaved his way past Lafferty along the end-line and dinked a ball to the back stick were the Republic of Ireland U-19 forward somehow headed wide with the goal at his mercy.

The Candystripes took a 22nd-minute lead through left back Daniel Lafferty's second goal of the season.

Awarded a free wide on the left flank, Kevin Deery whipped in an in-swinging ball deep to the back post and Lafferty lost his marker Conor Murphy to head unmarked back across Gregg from six yards.

Derry went close again on the half hour. A quick free picked out Gareth McGlynn whose dipping half volley from just outside the box was punched clear by the diving Gregg.

Having being pegged packed - mainly because of the strong breeze in City's favour - Bray mustered their first opportunity in the 35th minute.

Murphy's reverse pass slipped in Shane O'Neill, but he chose to cross when shooting was the better option and Eddie McCallion got a vital touch ahead of the breaking Jake Kelly.

But the winger did manage to claim the equaliser five minute before the interval.

Gary Dempsey's lofted free found left-back Dane Massey who miscued his volley, but it rolled to Kelly who converted from four yards for his second goal of the season.

Despite Bray coming out of the blocks early in the second half, it was City who almost re-took the lead in the 49th minute.

Former Seagull Eamon Zayed was thwarted at the near post by Gregg while McGlynn spurned the follow up by blasting wide of the target.

Zayed had another opportunity on the hour, nodding just wide off Derry's corner.

Seconds later at the other end, John Mulroy shot narrowly wide with a 25-yard effort conjured out of nothing.

In the end, it was the head of McClean that settled the tie.
