New Seanad Meets For First Time

The new Seanad meets for the first time later.
At half two this afternoon - the sixty new Senators - including Dr Martin McAleese will meet for the first time.
In the chair will be David Norris - who has the longest continual service.
The first item will be the election of a new Cathaoirleach - expected to be Mayo man and close friend of AN Taoiseach Paddy Burke.
But their jobs could be short lived - the Government has promised a constitutional referendum to abolish the Upper House - though that's not likely before next year.
