Morning Show with Declan Meehan, Friday 8th October 2010

Friday 8th October
The Morning Show with Declan Meehan

The ongoing battle to prevent the possible closure of Wicklow District Hospital kick started the discussion on today’s edition of the Morning Show with Declan Meehan. We heard all the latest campaign developments ahead of tomorrow’s planned protest march from Andrew Doyle T.D., while councillors Simon Harris and John Brady told of their efforts to safe-guard the vital facility.

Objections by the National Roads Authority to a proposed development in Kilpeddar were next on the agenda – Dennis Fielding from the Wicklow Town and District Chamber of Commerce and Councillor Nicky Kelly debated the contentious issue that may see hundreds of jobs blocked at Ecologic Data Systems off the N11.

Controversy reared its head once more when the subject of Commercial Vehicle Tax came up, with many listeners texting in to share their stories of frustration as they tried to renew their motor tax in the midst of deepening confusion over regulations. Declan stayed with the topic of tax when he spoke to Tim Quinlivan from the Irish Taxation Institute and money doctor John Diskin kept the financial theme going with his weekly helping of advice on all things monetary.

Money was central to the discussion again when the CEO of the Dublin Simon Community dropped by the studio to discuss the organisation’s expansion into County Wicklow but it was a different kind of currency that was of interest to Colette Ryan, a project manager with ‘Heads Up’ who encourages random acts of kindness to build a better society.

All our usual visitors also managed to squeez into today’s programme with tips on tasty, purse-friendly meals from Siobhán Donnelly and a lively defence of animal’s rights by vet in residence Pete Wetherburn. Finally the morning’s entertainment wrapped up with a sneak preview of what’s on offer at tomorrow’s Traditional Skills Day taking place at Wicklow Gaol.

Sligo edge out valiant Bray

A 90th minute penalty converted by Alan Keane saw Sligo Rovers come from behind to beat Bray Wanderers at the Showgrounds.

Keane drilled home his second spot-kick in two games after substitute Eoin Doyle had been fouled inside the area in a dramatic finale.

Bray had taken the lead through Gary Dempsey's superb 69th minute free-kick, before Matthew Blinkhorn levelled with a header on 76 minutes, and Keane won it from the spot with Dave Webster sent-off for disputing the penalty decision.

With Drogheda losing out to St Pats,, it paves the way for Wanderers to condemn the .Boynesiders to the drop if the Seagulls can avoid defeat against United this coming Sunday at the Carlisle
